I had a special opportunity to sit in on a meeting of a number of professional adults not long ago and I couldn’t help but notice an interesting sequence of events starting to unfold.

I wish I could say this was the first time, but unfortunately I’ve seen this specific phenomenon happen time-and-time again in various areas of education, community and the work-place.

I’m sure you’ve seen it before.  The meetings where innovation and ingenuity gives way to an ideology of, “We’ve been doing it this way for years.”  Yes, the saying is still true that it’s tough to teach an old dog new tricks.  Hmmm…

I’ve found that the unfortunate truth is, sometimes a person’s biggest shortcoming and challenge to overcome can be a complacent, overconfident, expert-attitude and mentality that can develop under the surface of lofty credentials and years of service in a specific area.  If given any power, this type of person can really stifle a group that’s trying to expand to new levels or move into new territory.

The unfortunate reality is the person may actually be oblivious to the problem because it’s always tougher to see the BIG picture when you’re in a small frame.  I caution you today to please don’t let this be you.  Don’t fall into the trap of what I call the, “Know-it-All Syndrome” created by years of service and lofty credentials.  Commit to always stay green and growing.  Stay innovative and open-minded and never tire of encouraging creativity and ingenuity and welcoming new ideas.

Just as we can’t use old recipe’s to create new meals, we also can’t use old systems to create new ideas.  No anybody that needs to hear this message today?  Hmmm…

Let’s commit to keep our mental immune system high to prevent becoming a victim of this wretched “Know-it-All Syndrome” as we continue in our attempt to make it GREAT.
